AT Protocol account guides

What is an AT Protocol account?

How are the app, account and host different?

An app gives you a way to do something: save links, publish posts or write documents. An account identifies you and holds repository records. A host, also called a Personal Data Server or PDS, stores the repository and files and handles account sign-in.

Link Jar is a bookmarking and read-later app. linkjar.social hosts accounts on pds.linkjar.social. You can choose Link Jar without choosing Link Jar as your host.

You need an AT Protocol account. An existing Bluesky account can sign in to Link Jar without moving hosts. You can also use another compatible provider. New accounts at linkjar.social are currently a free, invite-only beta.

Open the Link Jar sign-in page. Use your existing handle or follow the new-account path if you have an invitation. Your provider asks you to approve the access requested by the app.

What is the difference between a handle and a DID?

A handle is a name such as yourname.linkjar.social. It can change. A DID is the permanent account identifier. Compatible account migration can preserve it when the host changes.

Using a domain you control as your handle gives you control of that name. It does not change who hosts your data. See the custom-domain guide for current setup limits.

Can I use the same account in every app?

Compatible apps can use your AT Protocol account, but each app controls its own features, accepted accounts and data types. Signing in does not make one app understand every record created by another. Check the app’s requirements.

Your host’s sign-in page shows the access you are approving. Review it before connecting an app. Public repository records can also be read without signing in; they are part of the open network.

Where can I read more?

The official protocol overview explains the network model. For a move between providers, read what account migration requires. To start saving, get Link Jar.
